Matahiwi Cafe and Roadside Cabins is a relaxed spot tucked along the Whanganui River Road, blending the easygoing vibe of a country cafe with the practical comforts of a small campground. It’s a favored stop for those paddling or driving through this stretch of rural New Zealand, offering a chance to stretch out on the spacious outdoor seating or warm up inside a building adorned with retro and vintage touches that give the place a quietly nostalgic character.

Locals and travelers alike appreciate the balance between simple, well-made food and the setting. The cafe offers a variety of classic kiwi fare—think lemon cake, mince and cheese pies, and vegetarian quiches—served alongside coffee that, while on the pricier side, feels justified by the remote location and quality. The food counters tend to have a mix of sweet and savory options, which come in handy for campers, river rafters, or anyone passing through looking for a satisfying bite without fuss.

Camping cabins on site are a strong draw for those wanting more than a quick stop. These cabins come with basic cooking setups and hot showers, creating a convenient and cozy base amid the surrounding countryside. The cabins’ views overlook the Whanganui River, making them a quiet retreat from the usual busyness of longer trips or adventures in the region. Visitors often mention the friendly, hands-on hospitality from the owner, who is noted for going the extra mile—like offering help if you get a little off track while arriving by boat.

This spot shapes its appeal around practical hospitality and calm spaces rather than flash or hype. Early morning or late afternoon visits are best for the light and river ambiance, with the outdoor tables filling up during fine weather. It’s a place where river trail walkers, campers, and locals converge, drawn by the dependable food and the chance to pause in a setting that feels lived in and easygoing.

Lovely place with good food! We also overshot our landing with the boats and were grateful for the help of the owner!

Beautiful spacious cafe, lots of tables and seating inside and outside. My favorite thing was the lemon cake. Their case had a good mix of sweet and savory - mince and cheese pie, bacon and egg, vegetarian quiche… blueberry muffin, chocolate fudge cake, apricot bars. Kiwi classics. They also do toasties too. The coffees might seem a bit expensive, but considering the remote location, I thought it was a fair price. We also stayed a night in a cabin - dry, warm, with a covered porch in front. Good kitchen with big sink, pots, plates, cutlery, and fridge. Fantastic hot showers and clean toilets. You can pay by NZ bank card / EFT POS. Advice: If canoeing, look carefully for their sign. If you miss it and go over the rapids, you won’t be able to backtrack.

Lovely ladies and lovely small house. The café is good since this is the only café besides the river.
